Chloramine B Market - Size, Share, Outlook, and Forecast till 2026

Chloramine B (C6H5ClNNaO2S) is an unstable colorless liquid, derived of ammonia formed by substitution of one, two or three hydrogen atoms with chlorine atoms, which include monochloramine, dichloramine, and nitrogen trichloride. The term chloramine refers to a family of organic compounds with the formulas R2NCl and RNCl2. It is white colored powder with faint chlorine odor having melting point of 170-173 degree Celsius. Free chlorine or hypochlorite is used for acting as a powerful oxidizing agent which often dissipates itself in side reactions.

Chloramine B has antibacterial and antiseptic properties due to which it can be used as disinfectant. It can effectively inhibit growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Increasing applications of Chloramine B by various end-use industries such as waste water treatment plant, aquaculture, and others is key factor driving growth of the chloramine B market. However, recent studies conducted on chloramine B indicate that formation of toxic byproducts in drinking water may be higher when utilities use chloramines. Furthermore, studies reported that chloramine causes more dangerous byproducts than other treatment alternatives such as ozone or chlorine dioxide. Moreover, chloramine B alters trickling filter biofilm as evidenced by increased development of fungi.

Key developments in Chloramine B Market

Market players are involved in providing chloramine B for various applications, owing to its increasing demand across the world. Furthermore, they are involved in reducing harmful effects caused by consumption for chloramine B. For instance, in July 2012, areas of Owasso, Claremore and Collinsville’s water supply was converted from chlorine to chloramine disinfectant. Chloramine is not harmful to humans and is safe for everyday use. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the ammonia part of the compound is toxic to fish and other aquatic life. The disinfectant is rapidly broken down when consumed by humans, however fish absorb the compound through gills and cannot break it down. Chloramine was eliminated by using a Reverse Osmosis and Deionization filter system or by replacing the chloramine-treated water with distilled water. Furthermore, in May 2028, New Braunfels Utilities announced that it will be adding chloramines to the water supply of the Copper Ridge community as it prepares to incorporate the area into NBU's main water supply.
